What is 7-OH?
7-hydroxymitragynine (often shortened to 7-OH) is an alkaloid associated with the kratom plant (Mitragyna speciosa). Natural kratom leaf contains only trace, naturally occurring levels of 7-OH. In recent years, some manufacturers have sold concentrated or synthesized 7-OH products — such as tablets and extracts — that contain far higher levels than natural leaf. Regulators treat concentrated 7-OH products differently from botanical kratom leaf.
Federal Status
On July 1, 2026, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced Notices of Intent to temporarily place 7-OH above a specified concentration threshold — along with the related substances mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15 and MGM-16 — into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. According to DEA, the action targets synthesized products and products with elevated 7-OH concentrations, and does not apply to botanical kratom products containing naturally occurring 7-OH below the specified threshold. Once the temporary orders take effect, manufacture, distribution, sale and possession of covered 7-OH substances become subject to the Controlled Substances Act. Federal health agencies have also stated that 7-OH is not lawfully marketed as a dietary supplement or food additive.
Missouri Status
The Missouri Attorney General’s office has taken enforcement action concerning kratom and 7-OH products. In 2026, the Attorney General announced agreements under which a major distributor suspended all kratom and 7-OH sales in Missouri, and the office has stated that retailers using misleading marketing may face enforcement. Missouri lawmakers have also considered legislation addressing kratom products, including restrictions on 7-OH.

The legal status of concentrated 7-OH products in Missouri is restricted and continues to change under both federal and state action. Consumers and retailers should rely on official government sources for current requirements.
